Review: Lancome Hypnose Drama (Waterproof) Mascara

I love Benefit “They’re Real” mascara.  But it doesn’t come in a waterproof formula.  I have allergies.  I live in a hot, humid climate.  I need waterproof mascara.  Since I was able to find this at a slightly discounted price (I love outlet stores!), I thought I’d give it a go…

Pros:  Really waterproof.  Makes lashes look fuller/thicker.

Cons:  Weird brush. Can get clumpy if not applied carefully.  Contains parabens.

In Summary:  While I think this is a pretty good mascara, I’m not thrilled with the too-much-contour brush.  It’s a decent product, but not worth the price tag, especially since it contains parabens.

Love This! Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner

I know I haven’t posted in a looooong time.  I’ve been so busy lately I’ve barely had time to sleep (5 hours is enough, right?), let alone attend to my blog.  Anyway, I’ve gotten one of my major time-consuming “to do” items taken care of (shopping for a car), so I can take care of some of these posts that have been kicking around inside my head.

I almost always wear lipliner, and have quite a collection.  While my favorites (and pretty much the only ones I use) are NYX Slim Lip pencil and Sephora Collection “Nano”, I was willing to try the Make Up For Ever Aqua Lip, partially because it said “waterproof”.  Now, I don’t NEED waterproof stuff, but I often buy it because I know it will stay in place better in the hot, humid climate of South Texas.  Although I would normally not spend this much for a lipliner, I realized they last longer than lots of other things I use, so it didn’t seem like a ridiculous amount to spend, and this one certainly impressed me…

Pros:  Smooth texture.  Stays in place.  Doesn’t “bleed”.  Long-lasting.

Cons:  Can dry out a bit as the day goes on. Expensive.

Interesting information:  From the Sephora.com product description:  “…the Aqua collection of long-lasting lip and eye colors was created for the Parisian Aquatic Ballet. Tested under water for five hours…”

In Summary:  Honestly, this is the best lipliner I’ve ever used.  While I’m never going to be a Parisian Aquatic Ballet performer, I love that this product stays on all day.  As I do with all lipliners, I apply it to my entire lip, so that as my lipstick/gloss wears off, I have a “backup” color.  This one is absolutely perfect for my needs, even though the price prevents me from buying it in every color. (Yes, I’m tempted!)

Review: Make Up For Ever Aqua Seal

Desperate to find something to replace the long-discontinued and much-loved Benefit She-laq, I recently purchased this.  I needed a product to seal my eye brows, and haven’t had much luck with the Anastasia “Lash Genius” that was recommended by my local Sephora’s store associate. I wanted something liquid that could be applied with a small brush, because my brows are 75% drawn-on and a mascara-type brush just doesn’t work very well…

Pros: Alcohol, paraben, and sulfate-free.  “Eyedropper” type of bottle allows you to dispense a little bit at a time.  Doesn’t make eyebrows “crunchy”.  Keeps brows in place.  Can also be used to mix with eye shadows to create waterproof eye makeup.

Cons: Very expensive.  No brush included.

Note:  I believe this product used to be called “Eye Seal”.

In Summary:  I still don’t like this product as much as I liked “She-laq”, which came in a pretty glass bottle with a brush attached to the lid.  The brush stayed in the container, so you didn’t have a crusty brush to clean afterwards.  Unfortunately, I’ve been unable to find a comparable brush. (I should have saved the bottle!!!)  Using the right brush makes all the difference.  If you use a brush that isn’t pliable enough or is too dense, you’ll end up wiping off your brow pencil.  I dried a “dabbing” type of motion with the brush I was using and ended up with a rather messy looking eyebrow.  (I had to fill it back in with my “cheat” – a brown eye shadow which matches my brow pencil.)  Even with all the negatives, this is working better for me than the Anastasia Lash Genius.  I will also be able to use it in the summer to make waterproof eye shadow, so that will be nice.  I still think it’s too expensive for what it is and will be trying some of the more budget-friendly options I’ve read about online.

Thumbs-Down: L’Oreal Telescopic Explosion Mascara (Waterproof)

I stopped buying L’Oreal mascaras years ago, because I had 2 different ones that irritated my eyes. I don’t have particularly sensitive eyes, but mascara seems to be the one thing that causes me issues. (Only the aforementioned L’Oreal products and one by Buxom.) Despite my history, I bought this mascara. I was intrigued by the unique brush, and you know the rest: I had a coupon AND it was on clearance.  Plus, I needed a waterproof mascara…

Pros: It seems to have been discontinued, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally buying it.  Made in USA.  “Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers”, according to the manufacturer. Inexpensive.  Stays on pretty well.

Cons:  Contains parabens.  The wand part is horrible.  They were going for a “telescopic” look, so they didn’t pay attention to the fact that it’s too flexible to do its job properly.  The round brush is just weird.  It’s only convenient for outer eyelashes and pretty difficult to use on the rest – unless you like poking yourself in the eye. Mascara is just run-of-the-mill stuff, nothing special.

In Summary:  I’m not surprised this product has been discontinued.  If you happen to see it in a discount store and are tempted to buy it – don’t.  Seriously, save your money or spend it on a bottle of nail polish or something.  If you’re looking for a budget-friendly waterproof mascara, try Maybelline’s Colossal Volum’Express.
