TotalBeauty.com “Mystery Collection”

I have this weird oxymoronic personality issue.  I hate surprises.  And I love them.  Surprise, last-minute change to my schedule? Hate it.  Even if it’s something fun?  Yeah, still hate it.  Surprise in the form of a “grab bag” of stuff?  Love it.  So, when I saw totalbeauty.com’s “Mystery Collection”, I was intrigued.  Especially when I got a discount code…

About TotalBeauty.com Collections:  This website has several “collections” available at a time, with a good range of offerings.  Currently, there are 5 offered, (“mystery” is sold out) ranging from $15-$30.  The $30 one is a GREAT deal, but it’s a little “rated-R”, just so you know…

Pros:  No commitment!!!  This is a big deal for me.  I hate programs that require a monthly subscription – especially if it’s not easy to “opt out”. (Yes, I’m talking about you, Julep Maven program!)  Also – from what I can tell – all of these collections are a good deal.  Plus, you get to try products that might be too expensive to buy full-size only to find out you didn’t like them anyway.

Cons:  You might not like all the products and/or they might not meet your skincare/beauty needs.  “Full size” products advertised seem to be kind of small stuff, like lip balm.  (Oooh, full-size lip balm?  Awesome!)

What I Got:  The “mystery collection” contained items from the other collections currently offered.  (probably leftovers)  I suppose I could have figured out this is what I was going to get, huh?

Contents:

– Neutrogena Naturals Lip Balm (full size! 😉

– Q-tips (travel size)

– $50 gift card to nakedwines.com (a little tricky to use, but OK)

– Juara Candlenut Body Crème (Sample size  – .17 oz.)

– EVOLVh UltraShine Shampoo & Conditioner (travel size – 2 oz.)

– NYX Roll On Shimmer for eyes, face, body (full size, I think)

– NYX Color Lip Balm (full size)

– The Honest Co. Fragrance-free Face & Body Lotion (travel size – 1 oz.)

– The Honest Co. Fragrance-free Healing Balm (travel size – 1 oz.)

– Boscia Luminizing (peel-off) Black Mask (deluxe sample size – .35 oz.)

– Alfaparf Milano Illuminating Serum (deluxe sample size)

– (2) Ferro Cosmetics Mineral Blush Powders (deluxe sample size)

– (7) EBoost Daily Health Booster Water Additives (single-serve)

In Summary:  OK, I would never buy some of this stuff.  I have a good hair serum that I like.  I don’t buy stuff made in China (talking about you, NYX) or that contains parabens (also you, NYX) and I don’t feel a need for a water additive.  Other than that, I think I’ll get some good use out of the products. (reviews coming soon!) I’m sure it’s a good value – even if I only use these as emergency/travel items.  In the future, though, I’ll probably only order collections where I can see the contents.

Sephora – More than Just a Beauty Store

If you’re a big Sephora fan (like me!), you may already know all about the information in today’s post.  However, I just found out about Sephora’s “other” services (you know, other than selling fabulous, addictive makeup products!), so I’m sharing with anyone else who might not know…

Free Mini-Sessions:  Sephora has a set of “express services” that are offered on a walk-in basis.  You can change up your look with the following express services:  Smoky Eye, Perfect Lips, Treat & Conceal, Blush & Bronze, Everyday Eye, Essential Eyeliner, Flawless Foundation, and Faux Lashes.  These services (at least some of them) are also offered at the Sephora Inside JCPenney locations.

Makeup Application:  Many stores will do a makeup application for a special event (or “just because”).  The 45-minute session is one-on-one and is a great way to find a new look.  The catch:  You have to spend $50 on stuff to get the service.  (But hey, you get to keep the stuff – if you’re going to spend $50 in there, you’d might as well get the makeover, too!)  This service seems to be available at all the stand-alone stores (not the ones inside JCPenney stores). A handful of stores (ones located in major cities) even let you book this service online.

Personal Beauty Advisor:  You can get a 90-minute consultation that goes over your hair, skin, makeup, “and more” (don’t know what else there is!).  This service also comes with a custom makeup application session.  For this one, you have to spend $125 on products.

Classes:  Apparently, Sephora offers some sort of “classes” at select stores as well.  The one listed on the website now is called “Extraordinary Holiday Eyes”.  Call your local store to see if they offer classes.

Miscellaneous Info:  All the information about these services, as well as a list of locations that offer online reservations can be found here:  Sephora Beauty Studio.

Q & A: Drugstore Beauty Products

I saw this post on Sicilianna Beauty and decided to share my thoughts on these questions with you. I’m a big fan of several “drugstore brand” products, but some are just plain disappointing. Here’s a quick rundown…

1. What is your favorite drugstore makeup brand? Rimmel

2. What are your favorite cheek and lip products? Revlon makes great lip glosses (haven’t tried one I didn’t like). I haven’t found a drugstore brand blush that I like yet.

3. Least favorite product? Maybelline eye shadows. I’ve tried a few different varieties and they were all horrible.

4. What is the best makeup bargain? Wet N Wild nail polish. The brushes are amazing and it lasts as long as more expensive brands.

5. What’s your favorite underdog product (something that often gets looked over)? Cover Girl Brow & Eye Makers pencils. There are sooooo many (expensive!) brow-specialty products and kits out there, but I get good results with these.

6. A drugstore product that is overpriced is? I think most foundations are too expensive for what they are. Some of them aren’t much less expensive than “prestige” brands.

7. Your best drugstore dupes! I haven’t put enough thought into finding cheaper versions of expensive products, I guess. Sorry!

8. Drugstore product that isn’t worth the hype? Any foundation product that promises to “match” your skin tone. My experience with these products has taught me that they’re just a base (lotion-type stuff) with some color beads. As you move it around on your skin, it gets darker. I don’t see how it could magically match your skin tone perfectly, and haven’t found one that has.

Important Note:  Some of the gift sets out this holiday season are made in China. (even if the brand’s products normally aren’t)  If you’re avoiding made in China stuff, read the label.  (Also look for “Made in PRC” – this is a sneaky way of avoiding putting “China” on the label – it’s an abbreviation for “People’s Republic of China”) On Sephora.com, sometimes you can check the “Q & As” and find out where it’s made.

Burt’s Bees Gift Sets – $10 and under

Gift Idea for a Nail Polish Addict

I love nail polish.  I have more bottles of nail polish than I do pairs of shoes (pretty impressive, if you’ve ever seen my shoe collection…).  It must be genetic, because my daughter is also a big fan of all things nail-related.  If you have a nail polish/accessory addict to shop for this holiday season, here’s a great way to give them a gift they’ll love without spending a fortune…

The Inspiration:  This summer, I picked up a nail polish gift set for my daughter.  The one I got was by Wet N Wild, but I’ve seen them by other companies as well.  However, they’re usually not the “prestige” brands of nail polish I prefer to use.  This one is available at CVS right now for $6.99 with a $3 reward:

nail polish bucket

The Container:  Little metal buckets make great containers for a nail polish collection.  They’re super-cute and conveniently portable.  When assembled correctly as a gift set, you can see all the colors/accessories inside easily.  These mini buckets are available at most crafting stores, dollar stores, and sometimes in the dollar sections of mass merchandisers.

Mini Blue Bucket - $.99 at Hobby Lobby. Mini Wash Tub Bucket, $1.99 at Hobby Lobby.

Mini Blue Bucket – $.99 at Hobby Lobby. Mini Wash Tub Bucket, $1.99 at Hobby Lobby.

Contents:

– Nail Polishes:  You can raid the clearance aisles of Target, Ulta, Sephora, and other stores to collect enough nail polishes to fill the container.  (Ulta usually has a great selection of name-brand nail polishes that are at least half off – and you can use Ulta store coupons to get them cheaper!)  You want enough to create a “ring” around the inside of the container.

– Accessories:  Fill the center by buying cutesy, colorful nail files & buffers, nail polish strips, etc.  (Dollar Tree stores sell little nail polish glitter tubes!)

– “Travel” Items:  Look for nail polish remover pads in the selection of travel-friendly items at your local drug, beauty, or mass merchandiser store.

Assembly:

– Fill the bottom of the bucket with a block of styrofoam just tall enough to allow enough room for the nail polishes to be displayed (without falling out).

– Cut a circle of cardboard and put it on top of the styrofoam block.  Use a compass to make a perfect-ish circle, or you can use a can or jar as a template.  You can also use a small paper plate if you have one handy that works for your container size.

– Make “slits” in the center of the cardboard to insert nail files, etc. in an upright position.

– To keep all the nail polishes from sliding around, tape them to each other with clear tape.

– Elevate smaller items in the middle with colorful tissue paper.  Tape them to other items to keep them in place.

Alternate Assembly: Instead of putting the nail polishes in a ring, you can create “steps” with cardboard, and display them more like the example bucket in the first photo.

Voila!  The perfect gift for the nail-polish obsessed!  Not only will you be giving a great gift, you can take pride in having chosen and assembled it yourself.  Oh, yeah, and you’re saving money, too…

“No Name” Products

Like many people, I have favorite brands of beauty products.  I can’t say that I have one brand that I love so much I’d buy anything they make.  (I don’t think I have more than 2 items by a single brand in my collection of beauty products!)  Some fancy brands are worth the price, while others aren’t. Every now and then, I’ll try a “no name” brand (not the same as “drug store” brands like Revlon, Maybelline, etc.) just to give it a shot.  I usually find these products at discount stores.  Sometimes, I even like them more than the stuff that costs twice as much…

OK, So The Packaging Might Not Be Great:   Sometimes these products have really boring packaging.  Other times, they’re trying SO hard to make the packaging look nice that it looks odd (or just plain tacky).

Limited Availability:  Since items bought at discount stores are usually there as a result of some sort of “closeout”, store going out of business, etc., you may never see that item again.  Keep this in mind when you buy the no-name product.  Even if you love it, you may not be able to buy it later.

Examples:  There are certain things I just don’t want to spend a lot of money on.  The main 2 things that come to mind are cleansing wipes and makeup sponges (“Cosmetic Wedges”).  These items are disposable and it seems silly to me to pay a lot for them.  Here are some budget-friendly options I’ve found:

Facial Cleansing Wipes (pkg of 25) by Bellecare Switzerland

Paraben and sulfate free.  Contains Aloe & Vitamin B5.  Made in Italy.

purchased at Ross for $2.99

Cosmetic Wedges by Designer Perfect (pkg of 32)

Latex Free.  Work great.  Made in USA.

purchased at Big Lots for $1.50

In Summary:  If you like to shop anywhere you can get a good deal, you might be able to find products you need that will help you save some money.  You just can’t have it in your head that name brands are the only way to go…

Un-Wishing

The other day, I was gushing over some of the adorable new holiday gift sets being offered by my favorite cosmetics companies.  After a trip to Ulta, I have decided to “un-wish” for some of them…

Made in China:  OK, I’m not one of these crazy alt-right people who think China is trying to take over our country and have boycotted all things made in China.  However, there have been so many reports of unsafe levels of lead, cadmium, and even more hazardous materials in products made in China (never mind the potential human rights issues…) that I’ve decided to no longer purchase anything made in China if it comes in contact with my skin or food.

Quality?   It’s been my experience in the past that some of these gift sets that are offered at a too-good-to-be-true price usually are.  Some of the ones I’ve tried are made of cheaper materials and/or aren’t as finely-milled, which make them go on less smoothly.

Increasing Trend:  There were certain brands I noticed doing the “made in China” thing with their holiday gift sets (Yes, Stila, I’m talking about you…) but it’s happening more and more.  I guess as the economy took a downturn, people were looking for ways to save money, both on the corporate and on the consumer side.   In either case, I can’t blame anyone for trying to save money.  But when people expect a certain level of quality and you compromise that to save money, it’s a little shifty.

Very Sad:  I’m fairly devastated that the Lorac gift set I really wanted is made in China.  Of course, I may very well have been disappointed in it anyway, so I guess it’s better to be disappointed about not buying something than to be disappointed after you’ve bought (or received) it.  After all, I don’t buy brand name makeup just to have brand name makeup – I buy it because it’s (usually) better quality.  Lorac makes some of the best eye shadows I’ve ever used.  Either they’re normally very over-priced, or someone “cut corners” on making these – a set that contains 4 mini palettes with 4 eye shadows each.

Only $36 at Ulta. What a deal! (Maybe)

My Modified Wish List:  So, I have to update my wish list.  No more shopping online to find all the stuff I love.  I’m actually going to have to go to a beauty store and check out all the stuff I think I want before I add it to my wish list.  I already look like a crazy person going around taking photos of everything I want.   (When I get the “Can I help you?” question with the sideways glance, I explain that my husband and children need a wish list from me and taking photos with my phone makes it easier for them…)  So, I’ll only look slightly more crazy by turning the products every which way to find out where they’re made…

I Love Target

Anyone who knows me knows that I loathe WalMart.  I often joke that if I’m a really bad person in this life, I will be condemned to an eternity spent at WalMart.  The list of reasons I hate WalMart is very long, so I’ll spare you my usual ranting.  At any rate, there’s a solution: Target.  It is my go-to place for “drug store brand” beauty products, as well as some brands you can only get at Target.  Here’s why I love Target…

Free Beauty Bags:  A couple times a year, Target gives away a mini beauty bag filled with samples and coupons.  The easiest way to find out about them is to follow Target Style on Facebook.  Here’s a look at the one I got in the mail yesterday:

Contents: samples of L’Oreal Evercreme shampoo, conditioner, & masque, Fekkai Shea Butter shampoo & conditioner, Jergens lotion, Clear shampoo & conditioner, Pixi foundation primer, leopard print travel bag, coupon book (not shown)

On their Facebook page, I saw a post saying they’d given away their “final” beauty bag.  I hope they meant the last of this one or last one of the year, because I really look forward to getting these!  Usually, I love the little bag it comes in (it’s generally one of the name-brand ones you can get in their stores), and although this one isn’t as cute as the ones I’m used to getting, I can always use it for a gift or donate it to charity.

Coupons:  These beauty bags come with a coupon booklet.  Often, they’re the same coupons you can print off their website, but some of them “match” the sample items.  The great thing about Target coupons is that you can combine them with manufacturer’s coupons.  If you’re lucky enough to have a Target near you with a good clearance section, you can really rack up the savings!  Check the Target website (scroll to the bottom under “ways to save”) for current coupons.

Target Red Card:  Target also has their own credit/debit card (debit links to your checking account.)  When you use it, you instantly get 5% off your total purchase price.  Additionally, you can designate a school to get an extra 1% of your spending.  My only complaint about this (debit) card is that when I first got it, all the charges came off my checking account instantly (like when I use my non-Target debit card.)  However, the charges have been processed later and later, so now it’s more like writing a check.  Annoying.

Maybe a Little More Expensive:  Some things at Target are more expensive than at that other mass merchandiser.  However, with my Target Red Card savings, and combining coupons, I’m able to more than make up the difference.

Target Brand:  They have their own line of products called “Up & Up”, which closely mirror the products they’re meant to replace.  While I think some brand-name products are better, there are a lot of things that aren’t worth paying more for. (trash bags, food storage items, etc.)  The Target brand items are a good way to save money – and sometimes they have coupons for them, too!

And:  The lines are shorter at Target and the store associates are a lot more friendly.  My time is worth something to me, so I often don’t even care if I’m paying 10 cents more for a few things.  As an added bonus/motivation for me – the closest Target to my house has a lower sales tax rate than even the WalMart does.  It’s a little further down the road,  but at least I don’t have to deal with my vision being assaulted by The People of WalMart.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

I really look forward to this time of year. Although Halloween is my favorite holiday, November is when the Christmas “gift sets” start showing up in beauty stores.  I’m a sucker for any “combo kit”, “palette”, or any other multi-product set that comes along.  And for good reason…

Save Money:  Sometimes, a kit is just more cost-effective.  While the sets sometimes come with smaller amounts of products, you’re supposed to be throwing out your makeup on a regular basis anyway, so this way you’re not holding onto something you bought 2 years ago because you still have some left.

Portability:  Also, these sets are sometimes better for travel/on-the-go use.  You get several products in a more compact container, allowing you to throw it in a purse or whatever.

Expand Your Horizons:  If you always buy Product X and just love it, maybe there are other offerings by Company X that you’ll love.  Buying a combo kit allows you to experiment with new products.

My Favorites:  Here are some of my most-wanted kits.  I’ll definitely be adding these to my Christmas Wish List…

The newest Sephora Fragrance Sampler. – These are always on my wish list.  Read more here.

$50, but it comes with a voucher to get a full-sized fragrance.

Nails, Inc Gift Set

Love these colors. (And I’m kind of addicted to nail polishes!)

$25

L’Occitane Hugs & Kisses Set

Love their hand creams!

$15

Too Faced Shadow Bon Bons Set

$42

(OK, a little more expensive than stuff I usually ask for, but I love all the colors…)

Well, there are a bunch of other “gift sets” I’m interested in, but this is all I have time to post right now.
